Kernow is the name for Cornwall in the ancient Cornish language. Cornwall is situated at the tip of the south-west peninsula of Great Britain and its geology is dominated by its granite ‘backbone’. Mineralisation, due to the intrusion of this granite into the surrounding sedimentary rocks, meant that until the early 20th century, Cornwall was one of the most important mining areas in Europe. Tin, copper, lead, zinc and silver have all been mined here in the past. Handmade granite effect lampwork beads with silver trails and handmade textured sterling silver rings represent Cornwall’s mining history. They are teamed with Cornish tartan ribbon. The colours of Cornish tartan have special significance. The white cross pattern comes from the Cornish flag, black and gold are for the colours of the ancient Cornish kings and red represents the beak and legs of the chough, which is Cornwall’s national bird. Blue is for the sea that surrounds much of Cornwall.
